Keeping Tortoises

Sulcata Tortoises: Clifford & Cleo

All tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises. Although both belong to the order Testudines or Chelonia (reptiles whose bodies are attached to a shell), turtles are very different than the land-loving animal we call a tortoise.

The Bearded Dragon: The Perfect Exotic Pet

The perfect exotic pet, the Bearded Dragon is a good starter lizard for either beginner or advanced reptile keepers.

Beardies are friendly and funny.

They are more gregarious than some other species and unlike the green iguana, which can get quite large, they are a medium sized lizard, seldom growing to over 20 inches long, nose to tail tip.

Doggy Discipline

Training a dog isn't something you do and are done with. Training a dog lasts for as long as you keep it up and are consistent in the results you expect. It takes constant reinforcement and repetition. You train your dog to sit and every time you give the command and he does, you are training. What is most important is that you continue to reward your dog whether you use an "atta boy", a treat, or a pat.

A Bite Out of Shock Collars

Some people call them "Bark Collars" but, barking collars don't bark and aren't only used to stop dogs from barking. They are shock collars. Their sole purpose is not to train but to punish undesirable behavior with pain.

Grass Roots Gun Sense

too much going on in this world for us to hibernate

As the House Democrats held the floor of the House of Representatives during the sit-in for common sense gun legislation, I remembered the old slogan, "Power to the people." Until the sit-in, it seemed Americans were powerless to do anything about gun violence in this country. The sit-in gave us hope.

Gun Sense: We Need It

We need to send the right guy

The second amendment doesn't need appealing. We are hunter gatherers that need to hunt up and gather some gun sense. The second amendment needs to be revised and put into specific terms.

WWII Story: Enemies or Victims?

bombed building in Germany

While it is important to remember the horror of the concentration camps and the atrocities Hitler perpetrated upon the world, war is horrible from every vantage point. I know it's hard to feel sympathy for the Nazis, but this story has helped me remember that not all Germans were Nazis. Many were just victims of their times in the same way that many refugees are today.

Freedom from Religion:
The Light at the End of the Tunnel

light at the end of the tunnel

Atheism isn't a choice. It's a realization and once I fully understood that realization, my lack of belief became a cause for celebration. Atheists are often portrayed as doubting, unhappy people, but actually losing religion is a joyous thing, the real light at the end of the tunnel.

Ask Your Doctor:
Take a Good Look at Your Drugs

taking a look at drugs

Some days I think I am watching George Lucas's THX1138. Advertisements pelt us continually with news about one drug or another. Each new drug seems to be a miracle cure for whatever might ail us. Each ad suggests you "ask your doctor" about the drug. The inference is to ask your doctor to prescribe it.

Too Clean? What Are We Leaving Behind?

cleaning products

It's easy to go overboard about clean. If folks downsized their carbon footprints to triple-extra-small, someone would still be at them with a wipe.
