Taking Chances

Giving someone a chance is like selling them a raffle ticket. If they win the raffle, what do they win? Friendship and love are neither gifts nor prizes. Nobody gives another person a chance. When we welcome somebody into our lives, we expect to get something in return.

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard came from President John F. Kennedy.

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

For years this seemed backwards to me. What was so profound about asking what I can do for my country? It was me that needed the help. Then the other day, it came to me in a blinding flash of insight.

I saw the above picture on Earth Day. I added the caption, but after I did, I realized that while it is a nice sentiment, it is in error. Earth was not created for anyone. Earth is a magnificent biological system. We are each blessed to be a small part of it.

Too often, when they become adolescents, our children feel they must decide on what they want to be when they grow up. Adolescence is just too young for somebody to decide what they will do for a lifetime. Setting long-term goals at such a young age can hinder a young person's growth more than help it.
