Memories of August

children at play

Creeks and wooded walkways had all been explored.Forts were built and dismantled; some were rebuilt and some were abandoned. The days were hot, too hot for outdoor play, and so after supper we all went out into the dusk to reconnect our friendships with backyard (and front-yard) games.

More Time

family time

For just a moment, I wished the nostalgic wish that crosses every mother's mind from time to time. I wished that I could go back in time and hear the youthful voices of my children and their friends one more time.

Boxing Day

holiday packages

Sometimes it takes a while to get back into routine after the holidays. I totally forgot a very important holiday that falls between Christmas and New Year's.

One Bright Star

I sit here tonight and watch the star that I have "found" in the heavens. Memories collide and I am reminded of a sweaty little palm that held tightly onto my hand, a palm that, too quickly, slipped from my grasp.

Too Many Strays —Too Soft a Heart

Country life was the cat's meow—. Really! It was everything we expected and a lot we didn't expect. Day to day, we never knew who we would find at the end of our driveway, on our doorstep, or even tied to a tree. During the years we lived in the country, there was a steady stream of tail chasers and tail waggers that were dependent on the softness of our hearts.

Blooper: The Story of a Survivor

Blooper, a tuxedo cat

Only two out of every ten stray kittens ever find a forever home. This is the story of one of them. His strong will to live made him a survivor. His name was Blooper.

An Update: Lifting the Nicotine Fog

smoker at graveyard

A nicotine fog is more than just smoke that fills a room, it's a fog that clouds your brain. Nicotine fools you into believing that although you want to quit, you can't. The bad news is that there are a lot of cigarette substitutes on the market today that keep the addiction going.

Barn Burners

When my children were young, I learned that sometimes you literally have to have a fire lit under you to appreciate how dear those close to you are. We moved to the country looking for a safer, less stressful life for ourselves and our two young children. Our rural Minnesota house sat well back from the road. There was ample room for Nicki, our three-year old, and Lance, our six year old, to play safely on the five acre plot of land that surrounded our house.

Too Clean: What We May Be Leaving Behind

cleaning products

We might be just a little OC about clean, to a point that if we downsized our carbon footprint to a triple extra-small, someone would still be at it with a wipe.

Winona

Maybe it's because of the beauty of this area but the people here are among the friendliest, most good-natured, and warm-hearted that I have met anywhere.
