The Importance of Second Opinions:
A Lazy Eye Experience

doctor giving advice

For many years, I was intimidated by doctors. I grew up thinking the doctor was always right. I have a crooked little finger that resulted from a doctor telling my mom it wasn't broken. It apparently was. It wasn't until I had children of my own that I learned the value of getting a second opinion when you have any question at all about your doctor's diagnosis or the treatment he or she may recommend.

Too Many Strays —Too Soft a Heart

Country life was the cat's meow—. Really! It was everything we expected and a lot we didn't expect. Day to day, we never knew who we would find at the end of our driveway, on our doorstep, or even tied to a tree. During the years we lived in the country, there was a steady stream of tail chasers and tail waggers that were dependent on the softness of our hearts.

An Update: Lifting the Nicotine Fog

A nicotine fog is more than just smoke that fills a room, it's a fog that clouds your brain. Nicotine fools you into believing that although you want to quit, you can't. The bad news is that there are a lot of cigarette substitutes on the market today that keep the addiction going.

There's a rumor going around that ADHD is madeup by Monsanto and big pharma. It could not be further from the truth. If you have a child who tries to climb the walls, you know that ADHD is a real and horrible condition. Those scoffers, who think they have a cannon in the fight against big pharma and big chemical companies, are in the wrong part of the battlefield.

Ask not

President John F. Kennedy

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard came from President John F. Kennedy.

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

For years this seemed backwards to me. What was so profound about asking what I can do for my country? It was me that needed the help. Then the other day, it came to me in a blinding flash of insight.

Baby and the Goldfish

Siamese

One day after work, I came home to see Baby sitting on the table, looking into the Aquarium. As I walked into the living room, I could see that the carpet was soaked. My heart sank. I was oblivious to the mess because I was sure the fish was a goner.

When Love Leaves You Alone

Cher asks, "Do You Believe in Life After Love?"
The Bee Gees asked "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?"
It all boils down to how you survive when love leaves you alone.

Learning to Drive

After I finished driver's training, I thought I was road-ready, but passing the behind-the-wheel driver's test turned out to be something like climbing Mt. Everest. It took me four tries to pass it. The first was not entirely due to poor driving.
