As I walked our Airedale Terrier, Bailey, I especially enjoyed watching my neighbor walk her Miniature Schnauzer. I've missed seeing them lately. Although her dog was 14 years old and blind, he still had the Schnauzer independence.

We all want to provide for our children, to give them a better life than we had, no matter how rich or poor a background we come from. Yet, I think the best way to provide for our children is to prepare them to lead a rewarding life.

Taking Chances

Giving someone a chance is like selling them a raffle ticket. If they win the raffle, what do they win? Friendship and love are neither gifts nor prizes. Nobody gives another person a chance. When we welcome somebody into our lives, we expect to get something in return.

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard came from President John F. Kennedy.

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

For years this seemed backwards to me. What was so profound about asking what I can do for my country? It was me that needed the help. Then the other day, it came to me in a blinding flash of insight.

I can be a pretty assertive person, often bordering on aggressive. Once I worked for a boss who used to regularly tell me, “Give me a few minutes to hang up my hat and coat, okay?”
He would say it even when he was wearing neither coat nor hat.
