Cats have a reputation for being aloof. Still, when you rescue a cat, you likely expect that it wil become your companion. Sometimes that doesn't work out as you intended. You spend weeks or even months trying to coax your cat out from under the couch, the bed, or out of the closet without success.

Dog Chews

Dogs chew.
Instinct compels chewing, especially for teething puppies. My husband and I are no experts on dog behavior. Our dog, Bailey, tore holes in carpets and ate the knob off my cooktop. He also ate several keys off my husband’s notebook before we found a way that worked for all of us to put a stop to undesirable chewing.

Tabby Grabbing

When tabby balks at being picked up, it could be as simple as how you lift her (or him)
or/and how you hold him (or her) afterwards.
Tabby grabbing could be called pussy grabbing because it can seem as invasive as sexual assault to your cat. One thing you always need to remember in handling a cat is that an angry sounding "meow," a hiss, or a growl is as valid as a human, "No!"

Touch Me Not Pets

Some pets are terrified of touch, especially when it comes to hygenic or medical procedures. What can yo do about it? Here's one answer:

Wingin' It

street scene

Are our "feathered friends" really friendly? I have a ten-year old parrot (a green-cheek conure) and ruefully, I have to say, "Not mine!" I have been unable to train him to do a single thing.

Understanding Epilepsy in Dogs

our dog,Bailey Jenkinson

Epilepsy is found in all breeds and mixed breeds of dogs, that's why I am really glad we knew Gracie. Gracie was a very sweet little Italian Greyhound who lived with my husband's niece and Gracie had epilepsy. If Gracie's caregiver, Cindy, hadn't told us about the condition, I don't know if we would have kept our dog Bailey or not.

Adoption Jitters

Shelter Dog

For many dogs, the animal shelter is the only place they have found a measure of acceptance, comfort, and stability. The car ride that will be such fun later was a worrisome thing today as you drove away from the place he felt safe. He has no idea what's in store for him next.

Baby and the Goldfish

Siamese

One day after work, I came home to see Baby sitting on the table, looking into the Aquarium. As I walked into the living room, I could see that the carpet was soaked. My heart sank. I was oblivious to the mess because I was sure the fish was a goner.

Before You Bring Home an Exotic Pet

Clifford
Clifford may live to be 80 years old and will continue to grow for as long as he lives.(Quarter on his back to illlustrate scale.)

Reptiles may come to recognize you and acclimate to your care, but they will never bond with you like a mammal would. However, it isn’t just because they are cold blooded. It has more to do with what is in their brain from birth than the temperature of their blood.

Doggy Diarrhea

Sick Puppy

One of the most frustrating aspects of having a dog is that he can't tell you when he is sick. In fact, a lot of dogs are pros at hiding illness until their symptoms become physical. These tell-tale signs of illness are often, well … funky. For instance, diarrhea. Even after it starts, the why of it can remain a mystery.
