President of Us All

by Linda Jenkinson |

At the DNC Clinton said she will be President of us all. Maybe someone needs to remind her of that.

Man in trashbasket

Abby Phillip of the Washington Post reported that at a recent fundraiser, Hillary Clinton said, "You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the 'basket of deplorables'. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it."

She went on to say, "And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up" and finished with "Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America."

This is disappointing on several levels because the truth is, although we might see it as an undesirable part, they are a part of America, too. It is not the citizens who are undesirable but their attitudes. The last thing this country needs is a label that lumps a group of people into another trash basket no matter who those people are or what they believe. It is the trash baskets that are deplorable, not the people.

From one perspective, they are the people who need American democracy the most. They would certainly not survive in the world of Putin, in North Korea, or under the thumb of any number of other dictators.

The people Clinton mentioned at her fundraiser pay taxes, too. Like all of us, they are the doctors, lawyers, firefighters, soldiers, farmers, production workers, teachers, etc. that are the backbone of America.

They have children who need food and education. They need decent healthcare and jobs just like the rest of Americans. They have sons and daughters who fight our wars and who fiercely love our country, just in a different way, albeit with attitudes that need to change.

Hillary Clinton will be president over all of the people and she will need to accept the differences between her and them that she doesn't like as well as those that she does. She needs to cultivate their trust and good will and earn their respect as well as she can.

It's too bad she didn't think of that before she spoke. Bashing Trump is one thing, but bashing other Americans is another. That's what Trump does. She keeps telling us we can do better. We expect better from her.
